Quality Assurance and Standards Office
The office came to be in 2011. It is in the backdrop to try to try to establish an arm to look into academic matters in the curriculum. The office operates under the office of the deputy principal academics.
The main role of the office is to oversee quality standards throughout all the departments. It involves supervising and monitoring curriculum programs in the institute.
The office also is mandated in implementing the curriculum procedure. All the Head of Departments report to this office on curriculum implementation. We ensure implementation procedures are followed strictly in terms of student and teacher attendance, schemes of work and records of work are provided on time and followed strictly. Students also communicate directly to this office.
Since the establishment of this office there have been notable developments and achievements which includes; major improvement in teaching, assessment and evaluation levels. This is because the teaching and none teaching staff have an obligation to ensure all the right procedures are followed. The students also have their duty to ensure attendance and adherence to academic procedures are followed ton the latter.
The office has also made it easier to get the time that has really been spent on teaching and hence improving the teaching levels. Remedial measures are also done with regard to the above by ensuring that missed lessons are made up. The office also have instilled observance of timeliness set by the systems such that lecturers abide to the timelines.
ISO - Management Representative
The institution is ISO 9001: 2008 certified. We were first certified in July 2011 and recertified in January 2015 by Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS).
The institution has a Management Representative who links with the certifying body (KEBS) for external audits and certification. He is also incharge of Quality Management System (QMS) which outlines the procedures of daily running of the institution. The office of ISO conducts internal audits which is a check to the effectiveness of the system. ISO team comprises eight internal auditors who assist in carrying out internal audits. The institution is in the process of transiting to the new ISO standard i.e 9001 : 2015 The process is on going.
The management Representative coordinates with certifying body to ensure that the institution is certified by all relevant bodies. The management representative also represents the management during certification and surveillance audits. Internally, the ISO office promoting awareness of customer requirements as well as preparing and revising the QMS documents (namely Quality Manual, Quality system procedures and other documentations).
It is also the role of the management representative to ensure the compliance of all the functions as per the ISO 9001:2000 standard, and any other standard set. The representative is also tasked with preparing and conducting management review meeting schedule. The representative also prepares audit schedules, conducting internal audits, prepares audit reports and writes nonconformity reports.
The management communicates to the top management on quality issues / non-conformities and audit reports. The representative also measures and monitors the process performance, initiate necessary corrective and preventive action and creates ISO/Quality awareness for the associates by internal trainings. The office also does review of Quality policy periodically.
Strategic Planning and Performance Contracting
Strategic Planning & Performance Contracting department was introduced as a department in 2008. This was due to the requirement at that time that all the tertially
institutions sign performace contracts(PC) with their mother ministries. The department is currently headed by the PC Coordinator George Kamutu
Thika Technical Training Institute has from that time embraced performance contracting as one of the management tools to steer the Institute into higher level of performance and development. Performance contracting is intended to assist the Institute to focus on specific targets in a specific year. this has lead to structured and organised development
Before the ranking method in PC was abadoned, Thika TTI had been ranked number 7 out of all Tecnical Training Institutes in Kenya.
Currently, the department is implementing the 2015/2016 PC which will come to an end on 30th June, 2016.
Recently, Ms Glawin Gitau from the HRM Department was appointed as the Deputy, Performance Contracting Coordinator to assist in the implementation of the targets agreed on with the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology and the department of performance contracting in the Ministry of Devolution and Planning.
While there are many achievement attributable to the PC, the following milestones can be singled out:
1. ISO 2001-2008 Certification by KEBS. This has improved the quality in service delivery to our customers
2. The new tuition block. It has lead to increase in capacity to accommodate more trainees
3. Construction of the perimenter wall to enhance security
4. Increase in the student enrollment from 700 in 2008 to over 3000 currently
5. New couses have been started in many department that has boasted enrollment.
6. Capacity building through training of workforce. It can be noted that a nunber of staff have been trained on braile and sign lanuage to assist those with challenges
