As global industries rapidly shift toward renewable energy and environmental conservation, Technical and Vocational institutions are stepping up to train the next generation of skilled professionals. Leading this movement is Thika Technical Training Institute, which has anchored its technical training model on green technologies and sustainability.
Through a flagship initiative implemented by the Ministry of Education via the State Department for TVET (SDTVET), Thika TTI recently commissioned a state-of-the-art 335 kWp Solar Photovoltaic (PV) System integrated with a 430-kWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS).
Strategic Leadership and Vision for Greening TVET
The official launch of the solar power plant marked a landmark milestone for institutional sustainability in Kenya. High-profile leadership present during the commissioning included: Dr. Esther Thaara Muoria, PhD, CBS-Principal Secretary, State Department for TVET (SDTVET), Ms. Anne Kamonjo — Director of Greening SDTVET, CPA Mathenge Douglas Thoithi — Chair, Board of Governors (BOG), Thika TTI, Ms. Hannah Mburu — Chief Principal, Thika TTI.
This initiative reflects a broader government strategy to embed green skills directly into technical and vocational education, preparing trainees for high-demand careers in clean energy.
Dual Benefit: Operational Efficiency & Hands-On Training
Beyond drastically cutting grid electricity overheads, the solar facility doubles as a live practical training ground. Rather than learning solar installation and energy management solely from textbooks, Thika TTI trainees work directly with a real-world, high-capacity institutional system.
This immersive experience equips students with direct industry competence in:
Solar PV system maintenance and troubleshooting.
High-capacity battery storage management.
Commercial energy load distribution and grid integration.

During daytime operation, the 300 kW inverter output easily covers the campus demand (80–140 kWh) while simultaneously directing surplus solar energy to charge the 430-kWh battery bank for nighttime consumption.
